Brisbane supporters call on Queensland Labor Conference to protect the Channel Country

Western Rivers Alliance supporters, Lock the Gate supporters and other Brisbane locals assembled outside the 2021 Queensland Labor Conference calling on conference delegates to protect the Lake Eyre Basin rivers once and for all.

Every two years, Queensland Labor gathers to discuss policy priorities, put forward motions and vote on their party platform that will inform Government policy.

Western Rivers Alliance supporters, Lock the Gate supporters and other Brisbane locals assembled outside the 2021 Queensland Labor Conference calling on conference delegates to protect the Lake Eyre Basin rivers once and for all.

For the past three elections the Palaszczuk Government and Queensland Labor have promised to protect this incredible part of the world but they are still yet to deliver, leaving culture, livelihoods and wildlife at risk… so we took the issue to their doorstep.

Support for protecting the Channel Country rivers and floodplains was clear inside the conference too. The Labor Environment Action Network (LEAN) held a stall handing out flyers and speaking to Labor members about the need to protect the Lake Eyre Basin rivers and Channel Country floodplains from the devastating effects of fracking.

LEAN also put forward a motion calling on Labor to strengthen legislative protection for the rivers and floodplains of the Channel Country. After some negotiation, the motion passed.

This motion is important - it sends a strong message to party leadership that Labor members expect protection against the impacts of threats including unconventional gas drilling, and want to see strengthened legal protection for Queensland’s unique desert rivers.

A huge thank you to Western Rivers Alliance supporters for giving your Saturday morning to show the Government that protecting rivers and floodplains of the Lake Eyre Basin is an issue they can’t ignore.

P.S. The Western Rivers Alliance is always nonpartisan. We work with all sides of politics to ensure the rivers and floodplains of the Channel Country are protected.
